报告人简介:Minhao Cui is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Seoul National University. His research interests lie in wireless perception, cyber-physical systems, and smart Internet of Things (IoT). His work has been published in premier venues, including MobiCom, MobiSys, SenSys, and UbiComp, and has received several distinctions, such as the SenSys 2022 Best Paper Award and the MobiCom 2020 Best Paper Runner-Up awards. He has also been recognized as a MobiSys Rising Star and a Microsoft Research Asia Star of Tomorrow.
报告摘要:Vision-based perception using visible light has long been the primary way humans and AI systems understand their surroundings. As wireless technologies such as 4G, 5G, and emerging 6G become integral to daily life, the wireless spectrum now carries a diverse range of signals beyond visible light. Researchers are increasingly exploring how to leverage these signals for perception beyond sight, complementing vision in scenarios with blockages or poor lighting, and enabling material and environmental sensing. However, such applications often rely on dedicated transmissions, which can interfere with communications, increase deployment costs, and limit perception coverage, posing key challenges for practical wireless perception systems.
In this talk, I will introduce how to harness existing pervasive signals, such as leakage emissions and GPS transmissions, to achieve perception beyond sight. This approach builds on the observation that our environment is rich with ambient RF signals. For example, powerlines continuously emit 50/60 Hz electromagnetic (EM) signals due to alternating current flow, while hundreds of satellites orbiting the Earth transmit RF signals around the clock. By designing innovative hardware and software systems, I demonstrate how these naturally available signals can be leveraged to enable vision beyond sight.
